The short answer
Boutique hotels need RFID key cards that carry the property’s design language as faithfully as the lobby does — custom-printed, often in wood, bamboo or recycled stock, ordered in small runs, and encoded to drop straight into the lock the hotel already owns. American Hotel Cards makes design-led 13.56 MHz key cards (and matching wood-bead wristbands) in low minimums for independent and design-forward hotels, compatible with VingCard, Saflok, Onity, SALTO and every major U.S. lock system.
Why it matters
What this property type needs
A boutique hotel sells a point of view. Every surface a guest touches — the typeface on the signage, the weight of the door handle, the grain of the reception desk — is part of a single, deliberate story, and the key card is no exception. Yet most independent properties inherit a generic white plastic card from whoever installed their locks, printed once, years ago, with a logo that no longer matches the brand. The card is handed over at the most emotionally charged moment of the stay — check-in — and then lives in a pocket or on a nightstand for the entire visit. Few touchpoints get more dwell time, and almost none are as easy to elevate.
The constraint that trips up most boutiques is volume. The big-box card vendors are built for 300-room chain hotels and quote minimums to match. A 24-room townhouse hotel does not need 10,000 cards; it needs a few hundred, beautifully made, with the freedom to refresh the artwork when the brand evolves or a seasonal collaboration lands. We built our boutique program around exactly that — low minimums, real custom artwork (not a logo dropped onto a template), and the premium finishes that make a card feel considered: uncoated natural wood, soft-touch matte laminate, blind deboss, metallic foil and edge-to-edge full-bleed printing.
Material is where a boutique card earns its keep. FSC®-certified maple, walnut and birch cards have a warmth and grain no plastic imitates, and they tell a sustainability story guests can literally feel — increasingly the deciding factor for the design-conscious traveler a boutique attracts. Fast-renewing bamboo and ocean-bound recycled rPVC offer the same eco narrative at a different price and look. All of them carry the identical 13.56 MHz inlay your locks already read, so the upgrade is purely aesthetic and ecological, never technical.
None of this requires touching your access-control system. Your locks, your encoders and your property-management system stay exactly as they are. We match the inlay to what your reader fleet actually reads — MIFARE Classic, DESFire or NTAG — and ship the cards blank for your front desk to encode, so guest credentials are always written by your own system. The card changes; the security model does not.
Why American Hotel Cards
Built for the way you operate
The reasons hoteliers in this segment choose us — and what each one means in practice.
Design-led, not templated
Real custom artwork to your brand — full-bleed CMYK, Pantone matching, metallic foil, spot UV, blind deboss and soft-touch matte. The card looks designed, because it is.
Low minimums that fit your floor count
A boutique runs a few dozen rooms, not a few hundred. Order in the hundreds, refresh the artwork when your brand evolves, and never sit on a decade of unused stock.
Materials that match your story
FSC® maple, walnut and birch, fast-renewing bamboo, and ocean-bound recycled rPVC — a sustainability statement guests feel in the hand, not just read on a placard.
Works with the lock you already own
Same 13.56 MHz inlay your readers already use. Nothing to retrofit — we match MIFARE Classic, DESFire or NTAG to your existing VingCard, Saflok, Onity or SALTO system.
A check-in moment worth keeping
A printed message on the back, a foil monogram, a card guests photograph and keep. The room key becomes a quiet ambassador for the brand long after checkout.
A partner who works at your scale
Independent and founded in 2014, we understand the independent property. Send your lock model and a moodboard; we come back with samples you can hold before you commit.

It works with the lock you already own
Nothing here asks you to change your access-control system. Every card and wristband carries a standard 13.56 MHz MIFARE® or NTAG credential, so it drops into the readers you already have. Send us your lock model and we match the exact chip — then ship blank for your team to encode, or pre-programmed to your system.

Practical buying notes
A short checklist to get the order right the first time.
- 01 Identify your lock brand and model first — it determines the chip (MIFARE Classic, DESFire or NTAG). The model is usually on a label inside the lock body or on your PMS encoder; if unsure, send us a photo.
- 02 Wood and bamboo cards print beautifully but read differently to ink than plastic — ask for a physical sample of your chosen material before approving artwork, so the color and grain meet your eye in person.
- 03 Order a small buffer above room count: a working figure is roughly two to three active cards per room plus a reorder before you dip below a one-week supply.
- 04 Decide blank vs pre-encoded early. Blank cards (encoded on your own system) are the most secure and the path we recommend for boutiques; pre-encoding only suits staged openings.
- 05 Plan artwork around bleed and the inlay position — we provide a die-line so foil, deboss and critical type clear the antenna and the card edge cleanly.
Questions
Boutique Hotels, answered
What key cards do boutique hotels need?
Boutique hotels need custom-printed 13.56 MHz RFID key cards encoded for their existing lock system — most often in a premium or sustainable material such as FSC® wood, bamboo or recycled rPVC, ordered in small runs of a few hundred. The card should carry the property’s full brand artwork and use the same chip (MIFARE Classic, DESFire or NTAG) the hotel’s VingCard, Saflok, Onity or SALTO locks already read, so it drops in with no change to the access system.
Can I order a small quantity of custom hotel key cards?
Yes. Our boutique program is built for low minimums, so a property with a few dozen rooms can order in the hundreds rather than the thousands, and refresh the artwork whenever the brand evolves or a seasonal collaboration calls for it. Tell us your room count and we will recommend a sensible order size and reorder cadence.
Will custom wood or bamboo cards work with my existing locks?
Yes. Wood, bamboo and recycled cards carry the same 13.56 MHz RFID inlay as a standard plastic card, so they are read by the same reader and encoded by the same system — nothing about your locks, encoders or PMS changes. We simply match the inlay (MIFARE Classic, DESFire or NTAG) to what your reader fleet reads. Tell us your lock model and we confirm the exact chip.
How do I make the key card feel like part of my hotel’s brand?
Treat it as a print piece, not a utility. Full-bleed CMYK and Pantone matching anchor the brand color; metallic foil, spot UV, blind deboss and soft-touch matte laminate add tactility; a printed message or monogram on the back turns the card into a keepsake. Pairing a natural-wood or recycled stock with that finish work gives a card guests notice, photograph and often keep.
Are sustainable key cards more expensive for a small hotel?
Material choice sets the price, not order size. Recycled rPVC and rPET cards sit close to standard plastic; bamboo is a modest step up; FSC® wood is the premium tier. Because a boutique orders modest quantities, the per-stay cost difference is small — and a sustainable card the guest can feel often earns more brand goodwill than its cost. Request samples to compare materials side by side before deciding.
